Basic Services and Prices

FCA of SJ & ML:
  • PROMOTES end-of-life planning and preparation, practical steps to be taken before death, and endeavors to maintain public awareness and wariness through education and publication.
  • SEEKS TO INFORM AND INSTRUCT the public concerning the funeral industry, to offer reasonably priced options for dealing with remains at death, and to monitor the funeral industry on a local and statewide level.
  • WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH the national Funeral Consumers Alliance (www.funerals.org).
  • OPENS Membership to all.
  • PERIODICALLY NEGOCIATES, on behalf of their members, a contract with at least one (presently two) local funeral homes, which provide services to our members at a reduced cost.

We are run by volunteers and have NO CONNECTION WITH THE FUNERAL INDUSTRY or any religious group.

BASIC SERVICES offered by our CONTRACTED MORTUARIES:
  • AT TIME OF DEATH, your representative contacts the designated mortuary.
  • PAYMENT IS MADE directly to the mortuary at the time services are rendered.

CURRENT PRICE RANGE offered by our CONTRACTED MORTUARIES:
For both options, the following is included:
Services of the Director and staff to meet with the survivors, in the offices of the selected provider Funeral Home, at the time of death, to make final arrangements.

DIRECT CREMATION:         $750 to $795
  • Includes: Removal of deceased from hospital or other facility; refrigeration within 24 hours; preparing/filing death certificate and disposition permit; providing minimum alternative container in which remains are to be cremated; performing the cremation process (extra fees apply for cremation of cases weighing 300 pounds or more); cremation container, minimum plastic container for cremated remains.   
     Arrangements for the disposal of the cremains (ashes) are made by the family.

IMMEDIATE BURIAL:     $995 to $1350 (Does not include coffin or cemetery plot)
  • Includes: Removal of deceased from hospital or other facility; refrigeration within 24 hours; preparing/filing death certificate and disposition permit; casketing of remains; unaccompanied transfer to the cemetery; the minimum casket (particle board, no lining.)
     All arrangements are made and paid for by the family at the Mortuary of your choice.

OTHER COSTS AT TIME OF DEATH
  • County permit fee for disposition of remains.
  • California Dept. of Consumer Affairs fee
  • Certified copies of death certificate; need varies depending on requirements for bank accounts, investments, insurance, sale or transfer of property, etc. (Some entities will make a copy of certificate for their purposes.)  
      Ask if these costs can be arranged by the Mortuary of your choice.

TRANSPORTATION CHARGES
  • No extra fee is required for the removal of the deceased from hospital, convalescent, or other facility where staff is available to assist the Director’s one-man transportation attendant, to the Funeral Home, within a 30-mile radius of selected funeral home.
  • There shall be an additional charge of $150.00 for all removals that require a second attendant (i.e., residence removal, obese cases weighing 300 pounds or more.)
  • If transfer is from a site farther than 30 miles from the mortuary, whether a hospital or residence, a mileage fee of $4.00 per mile one way is charged.
  • If the mortuary is unable to transfer the deceased for some reason, there is a charge for the use of a private transporting company.
     Ask for the reason and the amount before you authorize the extra charge.

SERVICES AVAILABLE AT ADDITIONAL COST
Available, but not required:
  • Use of the chapel for viewing and/or a funeral service.
  • Upgraded casket or urn, or rental casket.
  • Graveside service, flowers, funeral vehicles
  • Embalming (not required for viewing)
  • Autopsy
     Check with the funeral director of your chosen mortuary for prices.
By law, a printed price list must be given to you before you sign a contract.
